The prefabricated home, or the catalogue house are by far the most commonly typology chosen by homebuilders, both private and commercial, when it comes to building new single-family houses in Norway.

Given the nature of the Norwegian landscape and in particular the Norwegian west coast; with its fjords and mountains. There seems to be a mismatch between the topography and the preferred typology of housing in Norway.

The main problem concerning this mismatch is the relationship between architecture and landscape. The possibilities for adapting the architecture of a generically developed catalogue house are limited, resulting in a need to erase the landscape in order to make the house fit.

The Vassteigen project aims to use the rational and cost efficient qualities of the catalogue houses; the prefabrication, predictability and possibilities of mass production, at the same time allow for a mass customization where the landscape and unique qualities of each plot is the point of departure for every project.
